Artist's Statement

My images are essentially drawn from landscape. They explore the thresholds between possibility, probability and certainty in the identification of that which is represented. They give rise to a number of themes which are interwoven to produce pictures amalgamating experience, ideas, imagination and observation.

Method of Working

I work in any media and method appropriate to the task in hand. For developing the themes and images I exhibit, my currently preferred medium is acrylic paint. I frequently multi-layer paint, with masked-out and exposed areas showing through top layers, and the relatively quick-drying properties of acrylic paints are good for this purpose.I am equally at home with other water-based paints, using traditional watercolour techniques for commissioned paintings and illustrations. Many illustrations require figurative and finely-detailed work, and watercolour is generally my preference for this style of painting. The overall range of media I use is wide: from oil paint to occasional printmaking techniques, and to digital photography and computer-generated imagery. Although drawing and directly manipulative methods are fundamental to my work, this cross-referencing of experience in other media is essential to provide a wider ‘vocabulary’ for visual statement.
