Hannah Shergold only left the Army in 2018, but since then has become one of the most successful self-representing artists in the UK, with her art raising almost £370,000 for charity. Her unique, colourful style uses palette knives and mixed media to create vibrant, energetic representations of the natural world. She weaves together acrylic paint pouring, gold leaf and impasto texture without compromising the anatomical integrity of her subject.
Shergold’s 2025 Collection will see the release of up to 30 new works, including British and African and wildlife, domestic animals and portraiture. She will also reveal her portrait of Rolling Stones legend, Ronnie Wood. The pair are both ambassadors for Tusk, the African community and conservation charity for which Prince William is Royal Patron.
Shergold began painting in 2016 whilst flying helicopters for the Army in Kenya and is entirely self-taught. Originally studying veterinary science at Cambridge University, she applies her anatomical knowledge to her paintings whilst playing with colour, texture and geometric ‘interruptions’. Ever keen to keep her work loose, Shergold often ‘knocks back’ a painting by deliberately scraping the paint from the canvas, leaving the shadows of previous layers to appear at intervals and adding interest to the finished piece.
It's hugely exciting to be returning to Mall Galleries in the autumn. I'm proud of how the new collection is taking shape, and thrilled that the added bonus Ronnie Wood's portrait will be on display and auctioned for Tusk at the Preview.

Shergold was a competitor in the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year competition as the winner of the Wildcard place. Her portrait was chosen by her sitter, Ashley Walters, for its accurate likeness and bold use of colour. Her 2025 portrait of Ronnie Wood, which is yet to be released, will be auctioned at the exhibition’s Preview event on the 30th September with 100% of the proceeds being donated to Tusk. Wood himself will be in attendance.

Hannah's work is always striking and thought-provoking, I love it, it never fails to raise amazing amounts of money for this wonderful charity that we both support. I can't wait to see how creative she can be with my portrait.
