Beyond the Language of Images
Within the realm of authentic Iranian art, truly enduring works are those that rest not only upon technical mastery, but also succeed in connecting the spirit of tradition with a creative and contemporary vision. The works of Hossein Ali Machiani belong to this category — works shaped through years of experience, dedication, and a profound understanding of the aesthetic foundations of Iranian art.
Born in 1965, Machiani is regarded as one of the distinguished contemporary masters of Iranian miniature painting, with more than 30 years of artistic experience. He holds a First-Class Artistic Degree (equivalent to a PhD) awarded by the Ministry of Culture and Art of Iran, as well as a Distinguished (Momtaz) Certificate in Calligraphy from the Iranian Calligraphers Association.
Machiani’s Solo Exhibition, *Javdan* (“Eternal”), held from 23 to 30 May 2026 at Mall Galleries and organised by [Capital Art London] in collaboration with the With My Roots Biennale, reflects the Artist’s masterful command of diverse traditions within Iranian miniature art — from the poetic delicacy of *Gol-o Morgh* (bird-and-flower painting) to the grandeur of *Tazhib* (illumination) and the dynamic elegance of *Tash’ir* ornamentation.
What distinguishes the works of Master Machiani is not merely his technical expertise in these disciplines, but also his ability to weave these elements together intelligently, creating compositions that are both original and deeply rooted in cultural identity. While remaining faithful to traditional foundations, the works possess an independent and contemporary visual language.
Without doubt, the works of Master Machiani are not merely reflections of skill and experience, but manifestations of a deep love for Iranian art and a profound reverence for the visual heritage of this land — a heritage that has found renewed life through the artist’s vision and hands, and which, through *Javdan*, is now being presented to an international audience.
