Step into a vibrant world where emotion meets colour and form dissolves into imagination. Colour Dream is a curated collection of abstract oil paintings by Maxime Zhang (Zhang Yi) that explore the subconscious through bold hues, sweeping textures, and dynamic compositions. These paintings don’t just hang, they pulse with life, inviting you to slow down, reflect, and connect with something beyond the surface.
The thick, tactile quality of oil paint adds depth and movement, drawing viewers into layered landscapes of feeling, memory and intuition.
Maxime Zhang is a French painter who was born in China (Qingtian, Zhejiang province). From a relatively young age, he developed a deep passion for painting, calligraphy, seal carving, and photography. In 1983, he moved to Paris, France, where he balanced a career in business with a lifelong dedication to the arts. Immersed in the rich artistic culture of Paris, he spent much of his time in museums and galleries, never giving up his artistic pursuits. Over the years, he has focused on dry plate photography and oil painting, developing a deep understanding of technique and colour theory.
Chen Lusheng, Director of the Fine Arts Committee of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, former Deputy Director of the National Museum of China, said of Maxime Zhang’s practice:
“The unique aspect of Zhang’s painting lies in the fact that his art education was not classroom-based … His artistic sensibility was established through refinement and careful consideration, a direction that encompasses both Western masters and contemporary figures. This pursuit of self-expression is what we see today as Zhang’s unique style.”
