Gareth Brown RSMA

Statement

Gareth works in the medium of oil paint on board, producing bold, contemporary representational images.  For him, an important and satisfying aspect of producing artwork is the joy of seeking out unexpectedly beautiful and interesting subjects.

Gareth's marine subject matter, often transient in its nature and most often found in working coastal environments, reflects his love of colour, texture, shape and form. He seeks to show the beauty that can be found in relatively unremarkable materials.

Gareth uses photography initially to capture multiple images of potential subjects. Significant time is spent reviewing and rejecting until he finds an image which offers an interesting final composition. He then draw out the image, allowing his own interpretation of the material before beginning to paint.

Bio

Born in Pontypool in 1962, Gareth Brown studied fine art in Exeter and lived in Devon for 20 years before moving to East Anglia in 2003, where he now lives and works.

Prior to quitting full-time employment to focus on painting Gareth worked in conservation, preserving ceramics, wall-paintings, mosaics, plaster-work and timber in ancient and historic buildings in the UK and Europe, such as the Palace of Westminster, Hampton Court, British Embassy Prague, Berkeley Castle and St. David’s and Winchester Cathedrals.

As well as showing successfully in a range of galleries, Gareth's work has been regularly selected for large open art exhibitions, receiving awards and selling to buyers in the UK and Europe.

Gareth was fortunate to be elected as a Member to the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) in October 2016.
