Baldwin's work is primarily about form. Baldwin searches for the personality of his subjects by working and reworking the structure until he arrives at a suitable synthesis, which is not immediately apparent at the outset.
Methodology
Baldwin paints in oils and draws mainly in charcoal. This allows him the maximum flexibility to rework the image continually, as he loves texture and colour. Baldwin works on multiple images at a time, from drawings and photographs. This combination gives him the best starting point for imagery.
Baldwin's approach to commissions is as follows: For portraits, he works with the sitter(s) in their own environment. He draws from life and take photographs for reference. He works the images up in his studio. Baldwin requests a minimum of one month’s notice on average. Other commissions are dependent on their nature.
