Anderson is a figurative artist, working from observation with some intuition and imagination thrown in. Through this, Anderson tries to evoke something of her own visual reality in all subjects. Drawing is fundamental.
Anderson works outdoors and in the studio, drawing and painting in a variety of mediums, primarily oil, sometimes watercolour or gouache. The starting point is a ‘gathering of information’ – sketches or paintings from a subject and sometimes lots of drawings of ideas.
Anderson works on several paintings at the same time to avoid the stagnation that can creep in when studying one subject and as a result, paintings can sometimes be worked on for a long time. Others can resolve themselves quickly.
The end results have usually been crafted from a process of scraping back and repainting, finessing to a point where the idea has been made somehow real.
