Statement
Andrew is a London-based artist whose work draws on his immediate environment; particularly the overlooked, modest spaces such as housing estates or the commons around London. Although he has a formal, detached approach to these places, the paintings carry a quiet melancholy. There are no figures in these compositions but the sense of life, drama and the intervention of humans on the landscape pervades his work.
Methodology
“Although I am a studio-based painter, my work is grounded in sketches and photographs made in the field - sometimes literally. I make recces to places all over the UK with my sketchbook and a camera and, once back in the studio, I construct, edit, refine and reassemble these into large compositions that, hopefully, have a rhythm, music and logic that is, in some way, independent of the subject.”
