Statement

I’m a figurative artist, working from observation with some intuition and imagination thrown in. Through this, I try to evoke something of my own visual reality in all subjects. Drawing is fundamental.

I work outdoors and in the studio, drawing and painting in a variety of mediums, primarily oil, sometimes watercolour or gouache. The starting point is a ‘gathering of information’ – sketches or paintings from a subject and sometimes lots of drawings of ideas.

I work on several paintings at the same time to avoid the stagnation that can creep in when studying one subject and as a result, paintings can sometimes be worked on for a long time. Others can resolve themselves quickly.

The end results have usually been crafted from a process of scraping back and repainting, finessing to a point where I feel that the idea has been made somehow real.
