Joshua Waterhouse
Elected in 2024, Joshua is one of our newest members.
Born in Newcastle, Joshua first completed a Foundation in Art & Design at Edinburgh College of Art before studying Fine Art & French at the University of Aberystwyth, graduating in 2014 with a First Class Honours. Joshua also spent a year in Paris studying Art History at the Sorbonne.
His work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including the BP Portrait Award, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters and New Light. Awards include the De Lazlo Foundation Award for excellence, the Burke’s Peerage Award and the Patron’s Choice Award from New Light.
Joshua draws much of his inspiration from artists of the Northern Renaissance while producing work with a contemporary feel. He paints with oil on wood panel in a way that is highly meticulous, producing portraits with a heightened sense of realism. Joshua tries to augment the narrative of a subject’s life through still life elements in the composition, in the manner of artists like Meredith Frampton, Holbein and others. The tradition of storytelling through still life plays an important role in his work.
