Artist Spotlight: Jenny Aitken RSMA
/ Royal Society of Marine Artists
The Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition 2025 is now open at Mall Galleries, running from 17 September to 27 September.
We spoke to Jenny Aitken RSMA, a marine artist and teacher exhibiting at the Annual Exhibition, about her practice.
Can you tell us about your background and how your journey as an artist began?
I have drawn, and been encouraged to draw, since I can remember. My grandfather and great uncle were artists, and my mum and dad supported me all the way. Drawing was a respite as well as an impulse. Painting properly began after university, where I specialised in photography in my art and art history.
Your work often explores light, atmosphere, and movement. What themes or ideas inspire your art today, and has that evolved over time or been a constant in your practice?
Drama in paintings always appealed to me, and light is a huge part of achieving that. Some of my earlier work is large and semi abstract, but always focused on illusory depth and sense of place. The more I painted outside, the more I was drawn to effects of strong sunlight on a painting's narrative.
You primarily work in oils. What draws you to oil as a medium?
It satisfies my every painterly need!
Your roots in Cornwall and the Channel Islands, and your love of the sea are central to your practice. How do these landscapes continue to shape your work?
The Channel Islands - particularly Alderney - have always brought the comfort of feeling 'home' to me. That sense of belonging is such a powerful thing - it is a theme that runs through my work. Nostalgic and Memorial.
What advice would you give to emerging or aspiring artists who want to develop their practice?
I would give lots of advice but this one thing stands out above all - develop an aim and pursue it. You want to get better at your practice? Define what you think 'better' means then study it incessantly.
And finally, do you have a favourite work you are exhibiting in the RSMA Annual Exhibition 2025, and why?
The sunset in the boatyard is my favourite. It's above the harbour in Alderney, looking west. It reminds me of the many times I've walked there, from child to middle aged adult, and different people I've been in those times. Pure nostalgia!
