In recent years, I have started to focus more on figures within interiors, exploiting the atmospheric northern hemisphere and the natural light that dominates my surroundings. My compositions are painstakingly pieced together to create a carefully skewed perspective that encourages the viewer to almost step into the scene.
Methodology
I try and work as much as I can from life. If I am painting a large piece, my paintings can sometimes take a while to complete. My sitters have to be patient. After doing preliminary sketches, I spend a long time planning my compositions on tracing paper, moving things around and changing and distorting the perspective. I paint in the ancient medium of egg tempura. It requires skill and patience, but rewards by conveying a unique sense of depth and intensity. I work entirely in the traditional way; making up my paint from pure pigment, the yolk of a chickens egg and a little distilled water. I lay down the paint on prepared Gesso panels; the whiteness of the plaster glinting through the fine matrix of cross-hatched coloured layers like light through stained glass.
