Presented by Pooja Singhal, Founder of Pichvai Tradition & Beyond
This summer, Pichvai Tradition & Beyond brings to London its first major exhibition, ‘Feast, Melody and Adornment’. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to experience over 500 hand-painted Pichvai works spanning the last century. This landmark exhibition showcases the exquisite artistry of this 400-year-old Indian tradition while highlighting its ongoing revival and evolution through contemporary interpretations.
Founded by art revivalist and entrepreneur Pooja Singhal, Pichvai Tradition & Beyond is dedicated to preserving and revitalising this intricate art form. Since establishing the atelier in Udaipur in 2015, Singhal has worked with master artists to restore traditional techniques, preserve intergenerational knowledge, and reimagine Pichvai for modern audiences. Through her efforts, this sacred art, once confined to temple rituals, has found new relevance in contemporary collections and global cultural discourse.
At the heart of the exhibition is the rich artistic evolution of Pichvai. Traditionally displayed as backdrops behind the idol of Shrinathji, a cherubic divine incarnation of revered Indian deity Lord Krishna, these hand-painted textiles originate from the temple town of Nathdwara, Rajasthan.
‘Feast, Melody and Adornment’ presents a breathtaking range of Pichvai masterpieces - from classical depictions of lotuses, sacred cows, and temple festivals to the intricate Deccan-style paintings that showcase the height of artistic skill. The exhibition also introduces modern reimaginings, where traditional motifs merge with minimalist palettes and contemporary aesthetics, demonstrating how this art form continues to evolve while staying rooted in its heritage.
The exhibition invites audiences to immerse themselves in the visual poetry, spiritual depth, and beauty of this unique art form. Pichvai art continues to captivate, inspire, and transcend boundaries. Showing from 2 – 6 July 2025, entry is free and there will also be talks and walk-throughs taking place throughout the week – more information to follow.
