Mall Galleries hosts first major Pichvai exhibition in London
This summer, Mall Galleries is proud to host Pichvai Tradition & Beyond for 'Feast, Melody and Adornment', the first major exhibition of Pichvai artwork in London. On view from 2 to 6 July 2025, it will display over 350 hand-painted works from the past 100 years, allowing visitors to explore the historical significance of the 400-year-old art form and its artistic evolution.

A Pichvai is a detailed, hand-painted textile originating in Ragasthan, traditionally hung behind the idol of Shrinathji, a cherubic incarnation of the Indian deity Lord Krishna. The main shrine to Lord Krishna can be found in the temple town of Nathdwara in Udaipur, which has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries.
The term 'Pichvai' derives from the Sanskrit words 'pichh' (back) and 'wai' (hanging), reflecting its purpose as a backdrop for the idol. These artworks had both ritualistic and commercial significance; large paintings were hung behind the idol within the temple as part of the seasonal adornment, while smaller versions were sold to pilgrims as sacred mementoes. These paintings served as visual relics, allowing devotees to carry an image of their deity back home, reinforcing their spiritual connection beyond the temple walls.

'Feast, Melody and Adornment' is to be the first major exhibition of the Pichvai art form in London. Visitors to Mall Galleries will be able to see traditional pieces with motifs of lotuses and the sacred Nandi cow, highly intricate Deccan pieces showcasing the pinnacle of technical mastery in this art form and more contemporary interpretations utilising a minimalistic palette.

There will be a series of events taking place throughout the week, led by Pichvai Tradition & Beyond founder, Pooja Singhal, who is dedicated to preserving and promoting this traditional Indian art form. Her atelier focuses on reimagining this historic practice in innovative and contemporary ways, whilst remaining deeply rooted in and inspired by its heritage.
These events include open walkthroughs of the exhibition with Pooja herself. Spaces are free but limited so advance booking is required here.
