The Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition offers many prizes and awards, for which all exhibitors are eligible. One of these opportunities is a feature in The Artist, a fantastic chance for an artist to reach new audiences and gain meaningful exposure.

Ann Flynn was the winner of The Artist Magazine Award at the Royal Society of Marine Artists Annual Exhibition 2024, and below we are pleased to share an extract of her interview with Caroline Saunders from the June print issue.

The Artist, June 2025

Ann Flynn has always found light to be her primary source of inspiration. She is driven by the sparkling light moving on the water's surface, the golden glow on backlit figures, or reflections of sky on wet sand in summer.

Contre-jour, or painting against the light, is a technique that has a big impact on her style. The light source being behind the subject creates strong silhouettes, reflections and interesting cast shadows. This enables experimentation with the contrasts between light and dark, making the light feel brighter and the shadows more intense. 'When painting still life in the studio, I set up my subject against the backdrop of an unlit window. I have to work fast as the sun speeds around, especially on winter days when it's low in the sky and will disappear quickly.'

Having my work showcased in such a respected setting has been both an honour and a proud achievement.

Being selected for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of Marine Artists at the Mall Galleries in London was a significant milestone in Ann's career. 'These prestigious institutions are renowned for their dedication to excellence in oil painting and marine art, and having my work showcased in such a respected setting has been both an honour and a proud achievement.'

Ann draws inspiration from the Impressionists and the exceptional draughtsmanship of the Irish masters, Sir John Lavery and Sir William Orpen. Along with many other artists, Ken Howard's work has had a big influence on her painting. 'Ken's ability to capture the effects of light, particularly in natural and urban environments, is something that I deeply admire.'
